For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Hydroquinone is an organic compound with a range of uses; in the medical field, people buy Hydroquinone as a topical solution for lightening skin darkened by hyperpigmentation. It must not be taken internally as this can cause pigmentation, a condition called exogenous ochronosis, which usually involves unsightly, blue-black colored patches.

There is some controversy over whether Hydroquinone can cause exogenous ochronosis from topical use, as well as whether it may predispose an individual to cancer. These effects are very rare, and may (or may not) be caused by other ingredients in topical solutions, usually lower-quality, generic versions.

Currently a prescription is required to buy Hydroquinone in most countries; some require it for all formulas, while others only for creams higher than 2%.

Hydroquinone creams should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. Parents should not buy Hydroquinone creams for young patients without explicit doctor approval.

Who Should Use Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone inhibits production of melanin, which causes most dark skin patches. Note that melanin also absorbs UV rays; patients who buy Hydroquinone will need to be prepared to protect treated skin from the sun, utilizing protective clothing and SPF15+ sunscreen.

While many dark skin patches are associated with aging---such as liver spots---there are quite a few other causes that can influence younger skin. Common causes include:

  • Birth control pills
  • Hormone therapy
  • Pregnancy
  • Melasma
  • Injury to skin (such as acne scars)
  • Natural causes (such as freckles)
  • Natural aging (such as liver spots)

Some individuals buy Hydroquinone simply to lighten dark skin, not patches of hyperpigmentation. This use is not recommended and may produce severe side effects, including exogenous ochronosis, cancer, and other problems, as the cream is spread over very large areas of skin. Use in these cases also tends to be long-term; normal pigmentation will likely return after treatment ends.

That said, we recognize some individuals will use the Hydroquinone to lighten normal skin anyway. These patients are strongly encouraged to do their own research, as there's little official documentation to be found, and to be alert for symptoms of side effects.

Treatment Overview

A spot-test should be done for those new to Hydroquinone; simply apply a small amount to a small patch of skin. After 24 hours, if no side effects develop, treatment may commence. Some individuals do react to Hydroquinone, however; warning signs are usually localized at the application site and include:

  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Blistering
  • Crusting
  • Severe redness

Some redness at the application site is normal and not cause for concern. Side effects other than the above are very unlikely if Hydroquinone is used as directed.

To use the cream:

  • Clean and dry affected skin.
  • Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area.
  • Avoid getting the cream on normal skin that shouldn't be lightened.
  • Repeat twice per day.
  • Wash hands after application, unless hands are the affected area.

And things to avoid during treatment:

  • Do not get the cream in mucous membranes. Rinse thoroughly with water if this does occur.
  • Avoid other medicated skin products---particularly peroxide---without doctor approval. Peroxide can cause temporary skin darkening.
  • If applying other skin products---such as sunscreen or moisturizers---wait several moments for Hydroquinone Cream to dry before application.

Most patients see visible results within 1 month of starting use, though it may take longer. If there are no visible improvements after 3 months of regular use, alternative products should be considered. It's possible melanin is not causing the problem. Treatment can be repeated in the future if needed; sometimes dark skin patches return.
